My open source journey

Seeking for career opportunities in the field of technology

I landed my first tech job one summer, when I had just turned 13. I was in charge of a small printing press. Not only that, but I did type, printing, scanning and photocopying of documents. I was motivated because where I grew up, it was uncommon to see 13-year-olds gainfully employed. My love and passion for technology has always been obvious, I am always looking for opportunities that can keep me learning and sharing (reason why I am particularly interested in open source). After my internship, I plan to get more internships (paid or unpaid), remote jobs and even scholarships that will cover the expenses for my Master’s degree.

Over the years, I can say I have developed just enough grit to help me stay determined even in the hardest of situations. My University studies were seriously impacted by the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon. On most days during my first and second year, we didn’t go to school because it wasn’t safe. I covered most of the course work on my own at home. On the days, I didn’t have internet connection to study online, I used other methods like reaching out to a friend or going through summaries I had made. I learned to make do with what I had.

This internship has improved on not only my coding skills (JavaScript, C++, HTML, CSS) but my soft skills as well. I am a better communicator, a better team player, more intrigued by technology and eager to contribute where ever I find myself. I am very much interested in working on developer tools and building modern day JavaScript and its engines. Nonetheless, I am open to gaining skills in other areas like community management and technical writing.

Before now, I worked on a few school projects. I, together with four of my friends, built a Library Management System with vanilla JavaScript, HTML and CSS (find the code here: https://github.com/Nasah-Kuma/NG-Library). It was challenging since it was my first, but we pulled through.

From August 2019 – November 2019 I was part of a training program for Web development. I was also appointed the team lead for the front-end team of 4 members, giving me the opportunity to once again work on my team and leadership skills. At the end of this program, we built a product catalog application which helps you perform the CRUD (Create, Read, Update and Delete) operations on products (https://github.com/Nasah-Kuma/ProductCatalog). I felt some pressure here and learned how to work on it without breaking down.

In addition, I am a holder of a Bachelor in Engineering in Computer Engineering from the University of Buea, Cameroon. Technology has changed the world. Help me be part of this change.
